The bi kat, on any site

A little pixel kat that follows your pointer around the page, sits down when it catches up, and naps if you leave it be. Like oneko, but bi. It's following you now: move your pointer and see.

Meet the kats

There are five. Pick one to try it here; the snippets below change to match.

Olly, Lily, Poppy and Dougal are the Ridgwell cats, from cats.ridgwell.family.

What it does

  • Follows you. It runs after your pointer (or your taps, on a phone) and sits down beside it when it catches up.
  • Naps. Leave your pointer still for a few seconds and it dozes off. Move again and it's up.
  • Likes a pat. Click it to say hi and it looks happy.
  • Knows when to go. Double-click it and it heads off until you reload the page.
  • Stays out of the way. If you've asked your device for reduced motion, it doesn't appear at all.

On your site

For a site you run. Everyone who visits gets the kat.

  1. Copy this line:
    <script src="https://kat.stuxie.dev/kat.js" defer></script>
  2. Paste it into your page's HTML, in the <head> or just before </body>. On a site with a shared layout or theme, add it there, so it's on every page.
  3. Publish. That's all: there's nothing to download or host.

Options

Add any of these to the same tag.

AttributeWhat it doesDefault
data-katWhich kat: bikat, olly, lily, poppy, dougal, or random for a different one each visitbikat
data-scaleHow big it is: 1 to 4 screen pixels per kat pixel2
data-zIts z-index, if you want something of yours to sit above itabove everything
data-nameWhat it's called when you hover over it (“Pat the kat”), for example catkat

For example, a bigger Olly: <script src="https://kat.stuxie.dev/kat.js" data-kat="olly" data-scale="3" defer></script>. Loading the script with JavaScript instead? Set window.katOptions = { kat: 'olly', scale: 3 } before it loads.

On every site you visit

For your own browser: the kat comes with you everywhere, and keeps itself up to date.

  1. Install a userscript manager for your browser: Tampermonkey or Violentmonkey.
  2. Click Install the userscript below. Your manager opens and shows what it is; click its Install button.

    Install the userscript

  3. Open any site, and there it is. To pick which kat (any of the five, a random one on every page, or none), click your manager's icon in the toolbar and choose from the list under StuxieDev's bi kat. It remembers, for every site.

To turn it off, switch it off or remove it in your userscript manager.

Just once

For a quick visit from the kat on whatever page you're on, with nothing to install.

  1. Show your bookmarks bar, then drag this button onto it:

    🐈 Kat

  2. On any page, click that bookmark. The kat stays until you leave or reload the page.

It brings whichever kat you've picked above. Some sites don't allow it; the userscript works on those.

As a oneko spritesheet

For apps and sites that take a oneko-style cat as a spritesheet upload: every kat, laid out the way oneko's own sheet is (8 by 4 frames: sitting, alert, scratching, tired, sleeping and running in eight directions).

  1. Download the sheet for your kat. 32px is oneko's standard size (256 by 128); 64px is twice that, the size the kat is here, for apps that take bigger sheets.
  2. Upload it wherever the app asks for a oneko spritesheet.

They're made in your browser from the kat itself, so they always match it.

Questions

Does it track me, or store anything?

No. It's original pixel art drawn in your browser: no images, no cookies and nothing sent anywhere. The only thing kept is which kat you picked here (in this browser), or in your userscript manager for the userscript.

I can't see the kat.

It doesn't appear if your device is set to reduce motion, so check that setting. If you double-clicked it, it's gone until you reload. On some sites the script tag and the bookmarklet are blocked by the site's own rules; the userscript still works there.

Is it in the way of my page?

It sits beside your pointer, not under it, so you can still click things. It's small, and you can send it off with a double-click. On your own site, data-z lets your menus and dialogs sit above it.

Will the kat change?

Sometimes it learns something new. Sites using the script tag get it within the hour, and the userscript updates itself.
